Saffron Walden RFC

Saffron Walden RFC Past and Present

The history of Saffron Walden Rugby stretches back to before the First World War. The as we know it today was first formed in 1962 following a local newspaper advertisement and inaugural meeting held in the Cross Keys pub. The first ‘Golden Period’ of the club was seen in the late ‘60s when the Cambridgeshire Knockout Cup was won, for the first of 8 times. The ‘80s saw the strongest period of the club’s history with a place in the 1st Division of the new Eastern Counties Merit Table.

2015 saw the appointment of Danny Hunter as Head Coach and although still firmly an amateur club a professional attitude has been instilled into the team. This is evident through their promotion to London 1 North (the club’s highest level since the league structure started) and once again winning the Cambridgeshire Cup.
