About Halstead

The town of Halstead is located in the Braintree District of Essex. The name is said to have derived from the old English hald and stede, meaning a safe place.

The now busy and modern high street is still dominated by the 14th-century church of St Andrew. Halstead Antiques Centre is based at Townsford Mill, a traditional wooden clapboard building straddling the River Colne. Nearby Moyns Park is a Grade I listed Elizabethan house, said to be where Ian Flemming finished writing From Russia, with Love.

Set in rural Essex, Halstead has many options for outdoor sports and activities, including the nearby Gosfield Lake, where open-water swimming and waterskiing take place.
