Local artist draws crowd at Saffron Building Society's Colchester Branch

Acclaimed local artist Alison Burchert held an exhibition of human and animal portraits at the Colchester Branch of Saffron Building Society showcasing her work in pastels.

In addition to the exhibition, local children were encouraged to get involved during the half term holiday and under Alison's tuition, were introduced to the basics of portraiture.

Alison, who holds regular classes for adults and budding young artists in her studio in Tiptree and increasingly in overseas locations, most recently in South Carolina – USA, was delighted to be displaying her work in this unusual location.

"The white walls of Saffron Building Society's branch provided the perfect stage and location for a 'pop up' exhibition to display my work" commented Alison. "It's actually a great space giving me the opportunity to sell some of my larger pieces of work. For those just starting a collection the chance to dip into the 'print bin' and take a piece of my art home for just £20 was also popular. I'm all for bringing art to people in new locations – not just galleries but everyday places so the beauty of art can be made available to everyone."

Lisa Howard, Saffron Building Society's Colchester Branch Manager said: "Saffron has a long tradition of supporting local people so we jumped at the opportunity to promote Alison's talent in this community art project."

Lisa first saw Alison's work on social media and was drawn to her animal portraits in particular, Lisa had no hesitation in inviting Alison to use the Saffron branch as exhibition space. "Our customers and passers-by have appreciated seeing Alison's work and the kids over half term were particularly pleased to be able to 'try out' animal portraiture using pastels to create some lovely, colourful work under her tuition."

Having had the desire to enter the art world from an early age Alison teaches art within local clubs and private classes, holding exhibitions and encouraging all ages to develop their artistic talents with workshops using her favourite medium 'pastels'. From 2008, she was Artist in Residence at Colchester Zoo, giving art classes and working with children during the school holidays to portray their favourite animals.
