Diabetes….on your bike!

Saffron Building Society raises funds for Diabetes UK

Staff from the Colchester branch of Saffron Building Society will be rising to a ‘cycling’ challenge on Friday, September 7th to raise money for Diabetes UK.

The Saffron Building Society relay team will be pedalling in branch on an exercise bike to see how many miles they can cycle during the day and would greatly appreciate any donations and support.

A number of geographical milestones have been identified to spur the team on: 41 miles would get them to Saffron Walden; 71 miles to London; 110 miles to Brighton; 210 miles to Glastonbury and 310 miles would be the equivalent of cycling to Plymouth.

There are currently 4.6 million people in the UK living with diabetes*. Those diagnosed face the risk of life-changing, and life-limiting, complications, unless they are given the very best care and the support they need to manage their condition well.

£10 provides vital information for people affected by diabetes. £50 could pay for a kit to use in research, analysing changes in immune cells. £100 could provide half an hour with the charity’s Helpline, a caring, listening ear.

Sarah Gardiner, from Saffron Building Society’s Colchester Branch said: “Diabetes is increasingly common but many don’t know how life-changing it can be. My other half, Dave, has been diabetic since he was 18 months old. Growing up with diabetes was and remains a major challenge for him.” Sarah added: “Great advances have been made using new technology to help those affected by diabetes but these advances cost significant money. We want to do our bit to help by taking on this cycling challenge.”

Colin Field, Saffron Building Society’s CEO added: “We are pleased to support Diabetes UK in the fight against this devastating and fast growing health crisis. Customers and passers-by are welcome to pop into the branch to make donations – I know the team will appreciate their support.”
