Royston Building Society's cash donation is music to the Town Band's ears

The Royston Town Band has been awarded £500 by its local branch of the Saffron Building Society.

The donation by the Society, part of its 2007 Branch Donation Programme, is designed to support worthy causes in the area, in a push to empower local groups to help their own communities.

Treasurer of the Royston Town Band, Brian Edwards said he was very pleased the band had been chosen.

"It shows the Saffron Building Society is really giving back to the community," he said. "The money will be used to resurface the Town Band Hall floor, where the band practises. At the moment the floor is in a state of disrepair and quite dangerous, as it is very old. The money donated by the Society will make a real difference."

Mr Edwards explained that the Royston Town Band had been going for around 150 years, and that it currently had 30 playing members who used the band hall regularly to practise and to perform.

Saffron Building Society Chief Executive Andy Golding said the Royston Town Band was an institution and very much part of the local community.

"The Royston Town Band is a source of pleasure to so many in the community and has nurtured generations of music lovers in our area and far beyond. We are delighted to be able to donate money to such a worthy cause," he said.

Mr Edwards said that in recognition of the Society's donation, the Town Band would be publicly thanking the Society at its performances.

"We acknowledge and thank the Saffron Building Society for their donation, and want to let our many supporters know how the donation came about and what it will be spent on. It's only natural that they will be getting a mention at our performances."
