Colchester branch of the Saffron Building Society helps local women's refuge

A local women's refuge has scooped the 2007 branch donation award from the Colchester branch of the Saffron Building Society.

The Colchester and Tendring Women's Refuge first started in 1975, amid a growing need to support women who were suffering domestic violence.

Three decades on, the Refuge is needed more than ever, according to Refuge Manager, Ann Taylor.

"We have two refuges, and cater to up to 25 women at a time with their children," Ms. Taylor said. "We have capacity for up to 50 children, and provide a safe and caring environment for them, with activities such as a pre-school, and after-school club."

Ms. Taylor said she was delighted the Refuge had been awarded the money.

"The Saffron Building Society really makes a point of getting out there and supporting local people and causes," she said. "We are thrilled and very grateful for the donation."

Ms. Taylor said the money would be used to carry on their healthy eating for children program.

"We rigidly abide by a healthy eating policy at the Refuge and we have a program for the children, designed to interest them in fruit, vegetables and healthy eating options. We prepare healthy snacks for them, and encourage the older ones to make fruit smoothies, which they love doing. Each child has its own fruit bowl, which they can help themselves to every day. The donation will fund this program for up to 6 months, which is particular good for them over the Winter and Spring months, when they need an extra boost of vitamins and minerals from natural foods."

Colchester branch manager, Scott Streeter said the Refuge provided crucial support to local women and children who were suffering domestic violence. "When we are happy in our relationships, it's easy to believe that domestic violence is the stuff of TV dramas, but it's real and it's happening in our communities. The Saffron Building Society is very happy to support such a deserving cause, one that helps to protect valuable members of our society, women and children."
